Where Gudauri is on the road
Gudauri lies on the Georgian Military Highway on the Tbilisi side of the Jvari Pass. When the pass closes after heavy snow or avalanche risk, the section beyond Gudauri towards Kobi and Stepantsminda (Kazbegi) is usually the one that shuts. The road from Tbilisi up to Gudauri normally stays open.
What can still slow you down
- Heavy snowfall: traffic moves slowly and police may allow only cars with chains or 4x4.
- Trucks: the highway is the main route to the Russian border, so lorries sometimes queue on the way up when the pass is closed.
- Blizzards and avalanche work: short closures of a few hours can happen, also below Gudauri.
How to check the road
The Roads Department of Georgia and local news publish closures and restrictions. Our operator follows the road every day in season, so you can also just ask in WhatsApp before you fly.
How to plan your transfer
- Book a car with winter tyres and chains, ideally 4x4.
- Leave Gudauri 4 to 5 hours before your flight in winter.
- Keep water, snacks and a warm layer in the car.
- If the road closes, we wait for it to open or move your trip at no extra cost.
